In Joy the dancers celebrate the strength of love and honors the concept of equal marriage for all. Debussy’s score was inspired by a painting by the French artist Watteau “Pilgrimage to Cytheria”, the island where Aphrodite, the goddess of love, was born. This is reflected in the opening tableau.<\/p>\n
